We Honoured Some of Our Stars

We were so pleased last Sunday to present our annual awards and long-time membership medallions!

Each year, we look at the work being done by the people of MCC Toronto, because we want to highlight and honour the extraordinary things they do. There are SO MANY of you who are doing wonderful things! This year, we presented awards to three remarkable people whose work shines over-and-above the ordinary.

The Beloved Disciple Award is given out to a person – or persons – for long-term, distinguished service to the Church, and this year we presented it to Margi Wallace (she/her), for her considerable work on clothing drives for our Refugee Program. Many refugees come to Canada with pretty much nothing but the clothes on their back, and are in great need. Also many come from countries that are much warmer than Canada (and as Rev. Junia says, that would be MOST countries!) and can really use some help with preparing for Canadian winters. Margi has been working hard for years filling these needs, and we thank her!

The Vision Alive Award is presented to wonderful people who have taken part of the vision for our Church and made it happen. Catherine Meade (she/her) has helped us realize a wonderful way for many of our Global Neighbours to bless our congregation with their energy, enthusiasm, and fabulous music, by organizing and leading S.W.A.P. – our Soulful Worship and Praise Gospel Choir. We have ALL been blessed by Catherine’s work!

Our Community Service Award goes to a person or organization that has made significant contributions to our wider community, outside of MCC Toronto. This year, the Rev. Dr. Brent Hawkes, C.M. (he/him) could not be more deserving of this honour. I think we all know about the incredible work Brent has done in and with MCC Toronto for our church and wider community, but this year we also wanted to highlight the incredible work that he is doing with his organization, Rainbow Faith and Freedom, in confronting religious-based discrimination against 2SLGBTQ+ people around the world. Keep up the great work, Brent!

We also honoured long-time members of MCC Toronto. You folks who stick with us for the long-haul are the lifeblood of our faith community, and we bless you and are blessed by you!
