Breaking Barriers: Our LGBTQ+ Refugee Programs Updates

As the leader of MCC Toronto’s LGBTQ+ Refugee Programs, I am proud to announce that we are celebrating 16 years of impactful service, making a significant difference locally and globally. This past year, I have focused on strengthening our relationships and partnerships, enrolling 3,200 new program participants, all identifying as LGBTQ+ community members. This growth has increased our membership to over 4,800 subscribers, underscoring our recognition as a welcoming space for LGBTQ+ asylum seekers.

In 2023, I am thrilled to share that those 460 individuals sought our support for their refugee claims, and we achieved a 97% success rate in securing favourable decisions. This outstanding outcome is a testament to the effectiveness of our programs and the practical support we provide.

Since 2013, as a Sponsorship Agreement Holder (SAH) for LGBTQ+ refugees globally, we have submitted 102 applications for resettlement in Canada. Initially aiming to support 5 to 10 refugees in 2023, our collaboration with Rainbow Railroad allowed us to surpass this goal, submitting applications for 27 individuals. This joint effort successfully integrated 12 new settlement teams and the warm reception of 17 sponsored refugees from various regions, including Yemen, Indonesia, Lebanon, Iran, Turkey, Kenya, Uganda, India, and Cameroon. This achievement further solidifies our commitment to the LGBTQ+ refugee community.
